SRD R370 Appeal Process – How to Submit & Check Appeal Status
Official SRD Appeal Portal
Was your R370 grant declined? Submit your appeal via the Independent Tribunal using the official link below. We recommend a quick Srd Status check to confirm which months were declined before starting.
A "Declined" status on your R370 grant application is not necessarily the final word. Many beneficiaries are disqualified due to automated system errors or outdated information in government databases. The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) appeal process allows you to request a manual review by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). Before appealing, ensure you perform a Sassa Status check to identify the specific reason for your decline.
Who Can Submit an Appeal
You are entitled to lodge an appeal if your SRD status is declined for any of the following reasons:
- Income Source Identified: The system believes you have an income of more than R624 per month.
- UIF Registered: Information from the Department of Labour suggests you are receiving Unemployment Insurance Fund benefits.
- NSFAS Registered: Data indicates you are a recipient of a National Student Financial Aid Scheme bursary.
- Alternative Income Detected: SASSA’s bank verification suggests recurring deposits that exceed the eligibility criteria.
- Government Personnel/Database Match: The system incorrectly identifies you as an employee of a government institution.
How To Submit an SRD Appeal
It is important to note that appeals are not handled by SASSA directly, but by the Independent Tribunal (DSD Website). Follow this step-by-step process:
- Visit the Official Appeals Website: Go to srd.dsd.gov.za.
- Required Information: Enter your 13-digit South African ID number and the mobile number used during your original application.
- OTP Verification: Click "Send Pin." You will receive a One-Time Pin via SMS. Enter this into the portal to gain access.
- Select Month: You must select the specific month(s) that were declined. If multiple months were declined, you must submit a separate appeal for each month.
- Submit: Provide a brief reason why you believe the decline was incorrect (e.g., "I am no longer receiving UIF") and submit.
SRD Appeal Status Check
Once submitted, you can monitor the progress on the same portal. Performing a regular Srd Status check on the main SASSA site may also reflect your appeal progress. Understanding the terminology is key:
- Appeal Pending: The Independent Tribunal has received your request and is currently verifying your data with the National Treasury and other databases.
- Appeal Approved: The Tribunal has overturned SASSA's decision. Your status will eventually update to "Approved," and a payment date will be generated.
- Appeal Declined: The Tribunal found that SASSA’s original reason for disqualification was correct.
Appeal Processing Time
How long does an SRD Appeal take? By law, the Tribunal aims to resolve appeals within 60 to 90 days. This delay occurs because:
- Monthly Review Process: Each month is treated as a new application. The Tribunal must check your financial status for that specific 30-day window.
- Treasury Verification Checks: The Tribunal must wait for the National Treasury to provide updated bank verification data to ensure no "alternative income" was present during the month in question.
Reasons Appeals Get Declined
Even at the Tribunal level, an appeal can be rejected for the following reasons:
- Income Still Detected: Fresh bank scans still show deposits exceeding the threshold.
- Identity Verification Failure: Discrepancies between your DHA records and the information provided.
- Duplicate Application: Another person has already successfully claimed using your ID number (Fraud).
- Government Database Match: Your name still appears as active on the PERSAL (government payroll) or NSFAS system.
What To Do If Appeal Is Declined Again
If the Independent Tribunal declines your appeal, their decision is typically final for that month. However, you have these options:
- Re-appeal Rules: You cannot re-appeal the same month twice through the Tribunal. You would need to seek a judicial review in the High Court, which is costly and time-consuming.
- Supporting Documentation: For future months, ensure you have proof from the Department of Labour (UIF) or NSFAS that your account is "Deactivated" or "Terminated."
- Alternative Support Options: If you are truly without income, consider visiting a local SASSA office to apply for Social Relief of Distress in the form of food parcels or vouchers.
Common Appeal Problems
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Appeal Button Not Showing | You usually have 90 days to appeal. If this window has passed, the button disappears. |
| Website Not Loading | The DSD portal often crashes during the last week of the month. Try after 9:00 PM. |
| No OTP Received | Ensure your number is RICA'd. If you lost your phone, follow our phone change guide. |
| Cannot Select Month | You can only appeal once the status for that month is officially "Declined." |
February 2026 Update
As of February 2026, the following updates apply to the appeal system:
- Current Appeal Processing Delays: The Tribunal is currently experiencing a backlog for October and November 2025 appeals due to a recent system integration update with the National Treasury.
- Recent Policy Changes: The biometric verification requirement has been extended to the appeals process. If your appeal is flagged for "Identity Verification Failure," you may be sent a SMS link to perform a facial recognition check.
- This Month’s Update: Minister Tolashe has announced that additional staff have been allocated to the ITSAA to reduce the 90-day waiting period to 45 days by the end of the 2026 financial year.
